Believe me, it's good to bleed sometimes. While some get nervous at the thought of wet on wet painting, these simple hearts will whet your appetite. Let me show you a few fun variations to loosen you up to this technique!

Recommended Supplies for Watercolor Heart Tutorials

  • Fluid paints work best for a fluid look. Use whatever you have or Get 20% off with this link. Want to know which specific colors you see here? 18B Crimson, 20B Cyclamen, 47D Tahiti Red, 27B Mahogany. Other neutral colors by Mijello Mission Gold.

  • 1/2" flat square brush

  • 140 lb watercolor paper. I'm using a block which seals paper on the edges to avoid warping.

I'm happy to share the materials I prefer, but as with all my tutorials---I encourage you to use the supplies you have.

Bleeding Hearts Challenge Level 1: Let Them Touch

Paint your hearts close together so that they bleed into each others' adorable little shoulders. These remind me of the paper chains we'd make, made better with watercolor. The kiss of colors is unpredictably charming.

Bleeding Hearts Challenge Level 2: Go Halfsies

Paint your hearts in halves with a different color on each half. The colors will blend if your paint is wet enough, so you won't see a stark line down the middle. Add neutrals to the mix--both very trending and very meaningful.

Bleeding Hearts Challenge Level 3: Go BIG and Overlap

Feeling bold? Maximize the translucent nature of the medium by overlapping, bleeding, and going halfsies on the color! The effect is that of light catchers. But these never stop glowing.
